Europe - Trip 2Day 3 - January 25, 2002
The 25th was mostly a transfer day. We sadly left the car at Tom’s place and got a drive into Maidenhead for the trip back into London. The train was uneventful but the luggage was a pain in the ass. This was the first day that we had to actually carry all of our luggage around with no motorized transport. Even though we said we were not going to buy much stuff while on this trip this seemingly didn’t apply to the 15 or so books that we’ve bought to date.
The lugging of the bags became obviously problematic when after leaving the Clapham South tube station Todd had to stop every 100 metres to rest his might yet inadequate shoulders. Not only painful but also embarrassing for one whose strength was legendary at some other time. Rather than rest our weary sinews we got changed, hopped the tube and headed to the Tate Modern opened only in the last coupla years. Located on the Thames in a converted power plant building it contained 6 floors of works – though like most days we were limited by time and headed directly for the Piet Mondrian and modernist exhibits. Night was falling and we were meeting Harriet near her work in 5 minutes so were only able to fit in one pint before.
Wandered over to Mezzo the bar/restaurant that were meeting the rellies at. All were supposed to arrive but the enigmatic and busy Nick – Harriet, Sarah, Matt and Andrew. Everybody arrived by about 8:30 and dinner commenced. The food and drink were quite good and everyone had a good time – the bill itself was worth about 6-7 days of B&B stays – well worth it when you only have so little time to spend with such fab folks. Later we attempted dancing in the club downstairs. Not pretty, though Sue entertained all by her dancing through the crowd. Back to Harriet’s and out came the port and other evening drinks – it was only 3:30 by then. END OF TRIP 2 - go to Trip 3 We was indoors all day except for the rainy bits when we was outside |
